Interceptor Flavor Tabs Heartworm Medicine for Cats

Interceptor Flavor Tabs are an easy way to make sure your cat takes their heartworm medicine each month.  As well as preventing feline heartworm disease by destroying the heartworm parasite in its larval stage, Interceptor also destroys both adult hook-worms and round-worms in the gut.

Interceptor heartworm pills are produced by Merial.  They contain only one active ingredient; Milbemycin Oxime that works safely to ensure no heartworm parasites remain in the system long enough to cause any harm to your pets.  This is the only heartworm preventative that can be used on both dogs and cats.  As usual you will need to use the right color coded dose, depending on the weight and time of pet to be treated.

Using Interceptor Flavor Tabs for Cats

Interceptor heartworm pills are supplied as a beef flavored chewable tablets.  They contain no actual beef so are safe for pets with beef allergies.  Interceptor are mild enough to be used on kittens from four weeks of old (weighing over 1.5 lbs).  You will need to buy the correct color coded pack, depending on the weight of your cat:

  • Interceptor green is for cats from 1-5 to 6 lbs
  • Interceptor yellow is for cats from 6.1 to 12 lbs
  • Interceptor white is for cats from 12.1 to 25 lbs

Cats will need to be given their heartworm medicine every 30 days year round, to guarantee heartworm disease is avoided.

The tablets are tasty and crunchy.  You will need to ensure your pet takes the entire dose.  For cats that enjoy dry food simply quarter the tablets and mix with their meal.  Cats that prefer wet food should have the tablet crushed and mixed with food, or a favorite such as tuna water.  If your cat likes treats you could break the tablet into halves or quarters and place inside special pill pockets.

The safety of Interceptor for cats is well recognised, in tests cats remained free of adverse reactions when given up to ten times the required dosage.  Of course if you suspect any adverse reaction after using any medication you should speak to your vet immediately.

As a heartworm medicine for cats it is important to use Interceptor regularly all year.  If you are late with a treatment, give one tablet as soon as possible and continue treating each month from this new date.  If you have skipped a few months speak to your vet as you may need to have your pet tested for heartworms prior to beginning treatment again.
